Q: Problem with Pages

Hello all,

Since I installed the OS X El Captain's recent update, Pages is crashing upon opening and I can't access my documents. I've tried restarting my computer, removing the program and reinstalling it, but nothing seems to work. Any ideas?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.5.5)

I have asked the hosts to move your post over into the Pages for Mac Support Community.

What specific version of Pages are you using as Pages '08, '09, and v5.6.1 can run on Yosemite 10.5.5? Ella's post is dated in 2008, and some of the steps in that provided link will not pertain to Pages v5.6.2.

Have you tried launching Pages with the shift key held down?

Recent versions of Pages are sandboxed, so a lot of the files it creates are stored in /Users/YOURUSERNAME/Library/Containers/com.apple.iWork.Pages/ now.

The first thing I'd try is renaming that folder to something like com.apple.iWork.Pages.old and trying to launch Pages again. If that works, you can always retrieve anything important from the old folder. If there is anything worth retrieving, it's mostly settings and cache files in there on my Macs.

After that, something else I'd check is fonts. When you launch Pages it checks the available fonts in the system, so a corrupt font may be causing it to crash. Open Font Book from the Utilities folder, select all the fonts in Font Book and then select "Validate Font" from the File menu. Font Book will scan through your font files and look for problems. It's not uncommon for it to find minor problems which it highlights with a yellow warning symbol (on my system it found about 39 duplicates which it flagged as minor problems). I assume if it finds any serious problems with a particular font it will flag the font as red. You can then select and remove that font from the Font Validation dialog, or disable it from the main Font Book window. Then try launching Pages again.

Let us know how you get on.

    Thank you so much alistairmcmillan,

Renaming the file in the Library directory worked and Pages is up and running again.
