Q: 27" imac late 2009 freezing

Hello,

I have an 27" imac late 2009 with 16GB RAM that is constantly freezing. In the following, I will try to explain all the things I tried before posting this:

  • Start the computer, everything goes well and after a few minutes, the imac freezes: I can see the screen and move the mouse but the iMac does not respond. I shut down and restart
  • Of the two stages of boot, it only works in the first: I see the apple logo and progress bar until it reaches about half, disappears for a moment, and instead of progressing, it displays white screen.
  • Next day starts but after a few minutes, it does the same.

  1. 1st attempt: Reinstall the OS with recovery
Choose the Macintosh HD disk and formatting
Computer is hooked at medium installation
I turn it off, turn on and finish the installation, but fails again once the OS is running
  2. 2nd attempt: RAM check
Burn a CD memtest, alt at start, choose CD and passes the test correctly without crashing
Reset, and same fault white screen average progress bar
  3. 3rd attempt : resets
    Reset SMC, no load
    Reset NVRAM, no load
Boot in safe mode (chime and then capitalized) and start correctly
Restart in normal mode and does not start

When I reset SMC, instead of displaying white screen after flash in the middle of the bar progress, the apple logo reappears and the progress bar stays frozen

I have read many other posts and it seems that you need the log from EtreCheck. I have run this tool twice (No problem - just checking and Apps are crashing) since none of the profiles matched my problem. Notice that I had to run in safe mode because I am not able to start normally. I don't know if this poses a problem.

Reverting to an older version of OS X, as you have done, will sometimes mask a latent hardware fault. If you're satisfied with that solution, enjoy. Never update the OS again beyond version 10.6.8.

    Hello transaural,

If I understand correctly, this is a 2nd hand computer. You have no way to tell what was done to it. Maybe the previous owners ran some kind of "clean up" program on it.

You have the original install disks. And you have already reinstalled. You don't have any data to worry about losing. I suggest updating to El Capitan under your own Apple ID. Make sure to report back and let us know how it runs afterwards.

    Hello Etresoft,

Thanks for your answer. I am now with OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.2 running on the main HD, which I have formatted from scratch. Above you can see the etrecheck log for that configuration.

What I did before making a new clean install in the main HD, was to install El Capitan on a 64GB USB memory to check if the internal hard drive was the source of the problem. So far (but only 30 min of use), the system is stable. Below is the log of etrechek under "no problem" analysis:

    Hello again Linc,

I am now with OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.2 running on the main HD, which I have formatted from scratch and installed from the original dvd.

Then, I made a new install of El Capitan on a 64GB USB memory to check if the internal hard drive was the source of the problem. So far (but only 30 min of use), the system is stable. I have passed the etrecheck test and your script. Here are the results of your script, in case you notice the same problem with the graphic card:

    Hello again J.,

You aren't going to be able to tell much when booted from the memory stick. Install 10.11.6 on the hard drive and test that. If there is a problem, it could be the hard drive or the hard drive cable, which you won't be exercising with the memory stick.

But the truth is, it isn't much use trying radically different environments like booting from a memory stick or booting from safe mode. The environment itself is so far out of the ordinary that it overwhelms any other potential faults. The only way to test is with a normal install on the hard drive with a standard (or admin) user account. If you have problems with that, you can try uninstalling 3rd party software and/or doing a clean reinstall of the OS. But if those don't work, all you can do is take it in for repair.

My point was that if this is a 2nd hand computer, there is no way to tell that the software hadn't been corrupted beyond repair. The only way to tell is to erase the hard drive and reinstall the OS. You have done that with 10.6.2. So far, so good. Now update to 10.11.6. Only then will you know if you have a good install of the OS. If you then have problems on a known-good OS install, then it must be a hardware fault.

I started the mac with the old OSX and when I was trying to reach the App Store, the system froze. Upon starting again, the system showed a report of an unexpected exit with the following text:

In this moment, reboot again into El Capitan on the 64GB USB to check wether it was a 10.6.8 issue or a hardware one. I found graphical artifacts like these:

and moments later, a kernel panic screen was displayed:

Now that the system is showing its fault, I am passing another test. I will put results in short time.

    Thanks to everyone,

    J.
