Q: It seems iPhotos can where the photos were token without GPS information?

I had trip in Iceland two weeks ago.  I had turned on GPS receiver of my iPhoone 6S, all the time.

The Photo on my iPhone and on my Macbook Air can identify where I toke the photos by show out name of the place that I toke the photos and place thumbnails at the right position on a map.   That's great!

But I can not find there are any GPS data in the EXIF info of each photos!   I had tried to read the GPS data by using the Preview or command line tool: exiftool.......    NO GPS data in the EXIF info of the photos!

Why I can not find the GPS location data in the exif info of the photos, while Photos can tell where the photos were token?

The reason why I want to dig out the GPS data in the photos I token by iPhone 6s is :

my camera do not has a build-in GPS receiver.   I want to get the GPS data in the photos token by iPhone 6s then write to the photos without GPS data by using tools like exiftools.

Thank you for your time.

Most of my iPhone 5s photos are showing GPS tags. How did you export the photos to see the EXIF data?

When you export the edited versions, enable "Location Information". File > Export > export ... photos.

When you export the originals (File > Export unmodified Originals), enable the sidecar file.

Then you should be able to see the GPS values with exiftool or Preview:

The first photos after turning on the iPhone may not have GPS tags, if you ware indoors or the iPhone could not yet find enough GPS satellites.

    Thank you léonie!

In your suggestions, for me, the key point is : "you export the originals (File > Export unmodified Originals)"

When I do the file exporting, I think the "unmodified" means "no change color hun, brightness, sharpness......" and any other information should be kept the same.  But I am wrong.

    Appreciate!

    Li,

which photo application are you using?  "iPhotos" is ambiguous.  Are you using iPhoto or Photos for Mac? And which version of the application?

    Both applications are very different.

When I do the file exporting, I think the "unmodified" means "no change color hun, brightness, sharpness......" and any other information should be kept the same.

    • In Photos for Mac you use the File menu:   File Export > Export > Export unmodified original.  The panel will look like this: This will export the original files exactly like you imported them.

    • In iPhoto 9.6.1 you use "File > Export" and set the "Kind:" to "Original". Then export the photos.  If any GPS has been embedded into the EXIF tags, they will be exported.
