How do I get my Apple ID and password? It seems I need them to do updates. The system will not accept my email address; it seems to think I already have an ID and password. News to me.

Sadly, it does not do me much good. Updates are supposed to be free. But it seems that I can't download them without providing credit card information. I find that very disturbing, since if I agree to that then I am saying that in future I can be expected to provide my credit card information to gain access to anything on the internet. What could possibly go wrong?
