iMac won't start up
An elderly cousin has called to say that his iMac froze and he couldn't shut it down. He unplugged it. Now when he plugs it in, it won't start up.
What might he do to correct this?

I think I can add some more information. I don't believe that this iMac user even hears the "ding" when depressing the start button.

PS: Most of the solutions suggested imply that the start button has some startup function.

Most of the suggestions in the Apple Support Topic I linked to, don't require any hearing at all.
Yes, the start button does have a startup function it begins the boot process. You don't have to hear the chime because after a few minutes there will either be an image on the screen or not.
Unplugging the iMac could have caused serious damage. Next time, you can just hold the power button to force-shut down the iMac. One question though, what do you mean by "won't start up?" That could mean multiple things. Tell us which one you are experiencing,
