Q: Loner T - Need help w/OCZ SSD

This is a Trion 1TB SSD brand new sealed in the box. Just received it a few days ago. I partitioned it into two volumes. I've managed to get the Sierra seed on the first volume without any problem, but I have tried putting El Capitan on the first volume, too, without a problem. But the second partition is always a failure. I have attempted any number of copies and clones, but at some point in the copy/clone it fails with either a copy failure or a copy failure with input/output errors.

I have done First Aid, erased the volume, tried again but without any success. The only success I have had getting something properly cloned was not to partition the SSD until after I had managed a clone of Sierra. Then I created a new partition but without any success getting a clone on it. I even tried writing zeros to the volume using Drive Genius. It succeeded, but then when I tried cloning it failed again. I have tried this using the Restore option of Disk Utility, using CCC, SuperDuper!, and Get Backup. They all get just so far before the problem arises.

I'm a bit puzzled with this because I have never had any problems using OCZ SSDs, but I have never tried the Trion model. I'm very experienced with HDDs and SSDs, so I think I know what I'm doing. I have done this dozens of times on countless HDDs and SSDs. Never ran into such a problem. I'm wondering if this particular one has a bad memory chip or a defective controller. Although if that were the case, then how did writing zeros manage to succeed?

I would certainly appreciate your expertise.

Each drive was connected separately to a Thunderbolt port on the computer. The third drive was connected via an SATA to USB cable. The Thunderbolt drives have TRIM enabled. TRIM is not available for USB connected drives.

Are you implying that the TRIM enabling was behind the problems? At the present, I have the Trion drive on one of the Thunderbolt sleds. I tried transferring a large directory and it failed. So, it now appears that the volume may be corrupted. I'm still working on this.

See my latest reply to Loner T. Seems the gods smiled a little early.

This is confusing, bereft of any of the usual suspects I know not where to point, can you repartition/format on the thunderbolt line without incident, should we assume that the drive works? have the heavens fallen?

I ask because this really should not be complex, yet it is

I have not found trim to be required with any drive, maybe over the long term but not in the early days (first 1000 hours), I only use Crucial's drives and they work the same untrimmed as trimmed.

My suspicion is on the hardware between the TB iMac port and the drive or the drive itself. It is a Toshiba SSD under the OCZ brand.

Reading this article, the slowdown makes sense. I suggest testing large file transfers over USB, rather than TB. If your iMac is TB2, I suggest not using the Trion via TB2 at all.

I will contact OCZ in regards to a replacement. I agree that it seems the drive itself is problematic. Although I had it working last night, after this morning the drive had become corrupt while the computer was sleeping!

I think I would have them replace it with a better model for which I'd pay the difference. But that will depend upon their warranty returns policy.

Thanks for helping, LT. 35 years of disk drives and this is only my first return. Not a bad record for the various manufacturers whose products I've purchased.
