Q: Child Apple ID has a credit - how do I use it to pay for purchases?

I use family sharing and two of my sons are under 13 and have credit associated with their apple id's from gift cards they redeemed.  I do not know how they can use this money to pay for purchases since the payment method always defaults to my credit card.  I tried turning off "ask to buy" and then sending a gift to myself from one of their accounts but this ended charging my credit card rather than using up the available credit.  It seems that the credit is forever stuck and inaccessible.

    Your sons are logged into their own accounts on the device/computer that you are trying to buy items from ? It should automatically use their balance for their purchases (you/they have gone through with an actual purchase and it charges your card, or have you/they only got as far as being asked for the card's details ?), if it's not contact iTunes Support : http://reportaproblem.apple.com or https://www.apple.com/emea/support/itunes/contact.html

    That is how gifting works, you cannot use an account's balance for gifting an amount (nor an app, song etc).

    Thanks.  I was looking for a solution to a problem that didn't exist.  We had never tried to purchase anything however when we did it used the credit and not my credit card.
