Q: Imac slows with "safari web content (not responding)"

Screen Shot 2016-07-23 at 4.56.28 PM.pngI have a mid-2010 Imac running El Capitan. I continually get a message on my activity monitor that causes my mac to slow and sometimes crash. When I quit out of the process on the activity monitor, my computer runs better until five minutes later when it happens again I wonder if some might be able to give me some direction. I will include a screenshot of what I am seeing on my activity monitor.

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9.1), 3.2 GHz Intel Core i3

Download and run Etrecheck.  Copy and paste the results into your reply. Etrecheck is a diagnostic tool that was developed by one of the most respected users here (and recommended by Apple Support personnel) in the ASC to provide a snapshot of the system and help identify the more obvious culprits that can adversely affect a Mac's performance.

Boot into Safe Mode, Mac OS X: Starting up in Safe Mode, and check to see if the problem remains.  Reboot normally and check again.

I would reboot more frequently that you have been in order to clear out temporary swap and cache files.

You have a lot of browser plugins. Are they all up to date & compatible with 10.11?

For example you have 3 logmein plugins - are they all required?

This gives an overview for removing plugins…

    http://macs.about.com/od/usingyourmac/qt/safariplugin.htm

Ask if that is unclear or you need help.

I'd also check that Flash is up to date and the same for the Java applet plugin (in System Preferences).

I don't think Java is a good idea to run in any browser (it is a massive security risk), so remove it if you do not need it - especially as it looks like it is about a year out of date.

Also check your Safari extensions for updates - is last pass from 2014?

If you have many tabs open close them all & see how Safari performs, some sites have terribly inefficient scripts that slow down everything, you may need to try to work out which ones seem to cause it after cleaning up some of the plugins etc.

What about the part about my backup disk. Again, I have no idea what that does except for the obvious...provide backup ??

What should I do about that?

You do not have a backup disk connected!

    The report specifically says…

      Destinations:

            Time Machine Backups [Local]

            Total size: 503 MB

            Total number of backups: 0

The term '[Local]' means the disk that is inside your Mac. That is not a backup. If you internal disk dies your local backup can also die. It is only backing up 500MB, that is a tiny fraction of your almost 300GB of data.

You really need to buy an external disk & use Time Machine or setup another backup system. If you think you have already setup Time Machine you need to investigate why it has failed or reconnect it to the Mac & check it still functions.

This explains 'local snapshots' for Time Machine…

About Time Machine local snapshots - Apple Support

Whilst local snapshots are a good idea you cannot rely on them as the only source of backup. You also need files to exist in another location, ideally in multiple locations, otherwise a simple fire or theft can cause you to lose all data.
