Q: iMoive '09 editing help

I am attempting to create a video in iMovie '09. I have the basic audio and video elements in place, and now am trying to add the extras. Specifically, I want to overlay images on the video track while it runs. Note the mostly while image above the primary AV track. I drag and drop it into iMovie and place it where I want to have it. I've tried PNG and JPEG files and neither become visible in the video stream, so I am thinking it isn't a file issue but rather a setting issue. I'm not seeing where I can get images to fade in and out of the primary track. I've watched tutorials on YouTube, but they are not helping much because some of the commands seem to be absent.  Should I upgrade to the latest iMovie? I kept this one because I've heard the newer version is much less versatile.

Any help or thoughts would be appreciated, thank you.

There have been many reports of problems with iMovie v.8 ('09) and v.9 ('11) when run under El Capitan, especially stills not showing.  I would say that only the latest version (10.1.2) runs properly under El Capitan.

Some capabilities have been dropped in iMovie 10 which affect people for example using old cameras or want to create DVDs but the new version supports more up to date equipment and even 4K video.  I would strongly recommend updating.  See also:
