Q: Apple TV

I have Apple TV generation 3. It has been sitting idle for a while. And now when I turned it on it has two icons on the screen and I couldn't connect to Internet as remote doesn't go in to the settings icon and my wifi settings have been changed. Please help.

Do you have the original remote? You will need it to change the network settings. The Remote app works over WiFi, so it's useless until WiFi is working. You can buy a replacement remote for about $20. Another Apple remote should also work, if you have one or can borrow one.

I Have original remote. I can pair and unpair it. But the selection doesn't go over to settings in order to connect to a network.

Since there are only two icons, I guess that means you cannot move the selection at all. Can you open the Computers icon, and navigate within it? Have you replaced the remote battery? You could also try power cycling the ATV. Now that it's been on for a while, it might give a clean start.

Assuming this is not the first time you have used your Apple TV

    1. You might try restarting the Apple TV by removing ALL the cables for 30 seconds.
    2. Also try restarting the router. (Also try removing it’s power cord for at least 30 seconds)
    3. If the problem persists, try a restore, you may want to try the previous procedures several times before doing this.
    4. If restoring from the Apple TV doesn't help, try restoring from iTunes using a USB cable.

If this is a new Apple TV, in addition to trying the above, it may also be that your network router is not allowing access to the timeserver, check that your router allows access over port 123.

You might also try connecting to a different network and then trying again on your own, you might try at a friends or use the wifi hotspot on your mobile phone if you have one.

If your remote doesn't respond you may need to change the battery or remove any pairing that might already exist with your set up.

Hold the remote close to and pointed at the Apple TV, hold down the menu and Rewind buttons together for 6 seconds or until you see a broken chain icon on screen.
