2016 12" MacBook hot and dead overnight

shut the covers at 80% power and woke up to a hot macbook that's completely dead. It would only turn on after cooling down and said it shut down unexpectedly. I did a hardware diagnostic and everything is fine. only native apps on computer. What could have done this?

MacBook, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6)

More than likely what is to blame is an app that was running and that drained your battery life along with over heating your computer, check to see what App possibly is taking up the most battery power and more than likely that will be the cause for the over heating and battery draining. Please reply if this doesnt work.
