email disappears after reading

Since updating to 10.11.6, every time I click on an email in my inbox, it marks read and promptly disappears. Its not only on my iMac, if I log into iCloud through my browser, my inbox is empty. I probably had several hundred emails in my inbox before the update, now there are none.

My subfolders, junk folder, sent, trash etc seem all intact, its just happening in my inbox.

If anyone has any idea whats going on I'd really appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks for responding to my post. I've removed Sophos as you instructed, but I'm still losing mail from my inbox. Each time I click on a an email to read it, it disappears. Sometimes it will go right in front of me, other times I'll return after a short time and my inbox is empty again. I've gone over all my mail preferences and can't see any settings that could account for this behaviour. Thats why I thought it might be a virus.

I'm moving vital emails to an archive folder (only the inbox seems affected) as a temporary measure, but I've got to figure this out for the long term.

The issue seems to have resolved. I tried shutting Mail on the iMac and putting the ipad/iphone in airplane mode for a day, then adding one device at a time, and wasn't able to replicate the problem. Its been 5 or 6 days now, so hopefully all is OK. The only other action I took was to hard boot the iOS devices. I don't know if that would be the reason the issue resolved. Thanks for your help.
