Toshiba hard drive locked

Hi there,

I've been using my toshiba hard drive for my mac book pro back ups for a while. My laptop has been damaged and I can't reinstall/reset it anymore - not sure what happened.

I have a mac desk computer and would like to copy some files from the back ups to it. However when I plug it in and find my desktop folder it is locked (all other folders are also locked). Is there a way of unlocking it from this computer as I can't access my laptop anymore?

Thank you

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.5)

Thanks, I have tried the info from the link provided, however on the info tab says I have custom access and I've changed the Privilege to read & write however if I go to a specific folder like desktop and change it it still won't give me access and higher just under Sharing & Permissions it says You have no access and won't let me change anything.

It looks like it is still configured as an active Time Machine backup. I am relatively new to Time Machine but I suspect if it is the active destination certain features will be disabled. Try turning off Time Machine.

It's a bit late in saying this but Time Machine is not part of Tiger, the forum in which you posted. It would have been better to post in the forum for the system you are using. You'd get faster responses from a larger audience. 😉 Are you still using OSX 10.7.5? If you are I can request this topic be relocated there.

That drive has the Time Machine icon and so there is something about it that is preventing you from getting that option. I tried getting information about my main boot drive and it did not show that option either so it doesn't do it for critical function drives. You may have to turn off Time Machine completely in system preferences but you will pardon me if I don't see to what extent you have to do it by trying it out on my computer. 🙂

The problem is the HD has backups from my broken laptop and ages ago when I created account on home computer my husband imported all info from the last backup. Then I had more backups done on my laptop. Months later, my laptop broke and now I'm missing all new files/work on my computer and so basically I need to update and access info on this HD that was for my broken laptop. There is nothing if I go through the Enter Time machine as this computer was never backed up.

Thank you

Ok then, where are the backups you are trying to access and what format are they stored?

Are they Time Machine backups or just copies from the old laptop?

Your screenshot shows that Time Machine is now actively backing up to Marika HD (though the last backup was last year).

Previously, when you said that you had accessed the folders, but they were locked, where did you locate those folders?

In the Backups.backupd folder or in some other folders on the disk?

My guess is your User ID is not the same in this current setup as it was in the old.

Give this a try: http://pondini.org/TM/E10.html

When they suggest you click on an item and Get Info, do that on the locked folders and try to restore that whole folder to the new "Temp" location.

If that doesn't work, follow the Last Resort instructions which will set your current user as the owner of the old backup files.
