DiskImageMounter not working

I have OS X El Capitan 10.11.6 installed on my MacBook Air.

I'm not able to mount any files with DMG-extension. That means I'm not able to install most of the applications outside of Apple Store. I've tried manually make the DMG-extension files to use DiskImageMounter to mount them, once the file name is double clicked. Doesn't work.

- If I just double click the DMG-extension file, I get the response that there isn't any program set to open the file.

- If ask the OS X to open the file with DiskImageMounter, I get the response, that the item (DiskImageMounter) is damaged locked or in a folder that you don't have permission to change. (error -9499).

- If I try to run only the DiskImageMounter straight by double clicking it's name, I get the response that the program can not be opened, because it is damaged or incomplete.

I have had this situation with the system for a while, and got several updates to the operating system since the problem began. None of the updates how ever have fixed it. What could I do get the DMG-files opened and the programs within installed?

Thanks already in advance for your help!

Thanks for the tip, but the problem is, that the combo update is also a DMG-file, so I can't open it or install it.. Any ideas?

I also already tried now to reinstall El Capitano version 10.11.5 by restarting and pressing CMD+R, but that didn't solve the problem althought the reinstall successful. Still, no software is assigned to open DMG-files, and I'm not able to assign DiskImageMounter to open them either. (error -9499).

"You might be able to circumvent this by mounting the Disk Image from the Terminal:

http://osxdaily.com/2011/12/17/mount-a-dmg-from-the-command-line-in-mac-os-x/"

I tried that too, and managed to mount it with the terminal. How ever, once mounted there was a .pkg type of file inside. Couldn't proceed from there on. Thanks anyway.

Finally, I managed to crack this one. I think the origin of the error might be from installing Homebrew of Xcode, or some software with some Terminal work included. Anyway, the problem was this:

- Programs within ~/System are protected and the rights can not be changed (as far as I know). I tried it, but the answer was always, that I don't have enough rights to do it. Couldn't find any good Terminal script for it either. The DiskImageMounter is located deep within the system structure ~/System/Library/CoreServices/. I did even a reinstallation of the operating system (not a clean install). I downgraded from 10.11.6 to 10.11.5. This didn't have any impact to my problem. As I was just about to make a complete clean install and had already created a memory stick with El Capitan within, I decided to give a try to one very simple test and that was the final solution.

Solution:

I created a new account with administrator permissions. That worked, the new account extracted DMG-files without any problems at all. So if you end up with problems with rights deep inside the system folders, this might the solution for you too. 🙂🙂🙂

The .dmg file held inside a .pkg file. There was no program set to open either one of those file types, and I wasn't able to assign any program to open them up either. So as I clicked the .pkg, the operating system asked what program would I like to use to open it. There was no luck trying different programs on that one, including the DiskImageMounter. But I managed to solve the problem: created a new user for me with administrator permissions and deleted the old user.

Thanks for your help!
