Q: connecting my mac to wifi also connects my iphone. what is that called?

I bought a new wifi access point and set it up from my mac. I typed in the wifi password using my mac, then switched over to my iPhone so I could then also connect it to the same wifi - but it was already connected. Hmm.

I then went to my wife's mac and connected it to the wifi, then to her iPhone to connect it - and it too was already connected to the wifi.

So connecting a mac will connect the paired iPhone to the same network. That's neat, but what feature is it in, and what is it called?

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X El Capitan (10.11), 2015, 2.8GHZ i7, 16GB
