Q: Why does El Capitan have the spinning ball problem

Since I upgraded to El Capitan, I get a spinning ball for about 20 seconds almost every time that I click the mouse.

Why didn't Apple fix this problem with last month's update?

    Post an Etrecheck report here.

    http://etrecheck.com/

and if you are running any Mac AV, any 3rd party utility, remove as per the developers directions (e.g just don't throw in thrash and think it's gone, it's not)

Until you start with those the beachballs are commonly caused by their existence on your system.

There is no problem to solve. This is specific to your machine. Please post the Etrecheck report, as Jimmy requested, so we can have a clue as to what may be causing this for you and assist you.

Here is the report.  If it is specific to my machine, then why didn't I have a problem until I upgraded to El Capitan?

I have the EtreCheck report, but this reply won't let me attach a PDF file.  I also put the original in the clipboard, but I don't see to attach that.

To put the report here, just copy (command-C) paste it into your post (command-V).

You ask why this problem only occurred in EC: most problems are caused by software conflicts - old software that is not updated for the current OS, anti-virus or "cleaner" programs are the most common.

You may, for example, have a driver for a device which worked fine in an older OS but needs to be updated for EC. This will of course cause issues in EC that were not there before, but it is not a bug in the OS.

Thank you for the advice.  I was looking for a paper clip that the mail utility has.

Two gigs of RAM is NOT enough to effectivly run the OS, you are beach balling due to lack of RAM among other things:

Mac mini (Mid 2011): Memory specifications and upgrades - Apple Support

Apple says the limit is 4GB RAM

    OWC Says limit is 16GB

    https://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/Apple_Mac_mini/DDR3_1333

these guys are knowledgable with macs, they have the backing of many users on these forums because they provided a great customer experience.

get rid of the WD controller software for the WD hard drive.

those "utilities" are often unnecessary and almost always problematic.

    shutdown

    boot into safe mode

Try safe mode if your Mac doesn't finish starting up - Apple Support

    check for stability

Apples assessment that you need 2GB to run El Capitan has been repeatedly put to the test and failed miserably under dozens of posts on these forums where users with 2GB/4GB RAM experience what you are seeing time after time. 2GB RAM is enough to boot this OS but once you start using it for anything you will immediately see the limits of not enough RAM to bring performance to the system.

Thanks for the advice.  I will implement your suggestions by the end of the week.

It is interesting that every OS requires more RAM.  Nobody writes efficient software anymore since memory got cheap.  When I started programming, I had kilobytes of RAM.

I uninstalled WD Smartware.  Is that the controller you are referring to?  If not, where will I find it?

Me too... but we have to be realistic. For a current-day OS (not just for a Mac), 2GB is barely enough to start. As soon as you start working on the machine, it will be starved for RAM, and performance will be very poor. In your case, adding RAM is an obvious move. And it is not expensive: 2 4GB sticks cost less than $50. And if you want the feel of a completely new machine, you can add a nice SSD for about as much.

    repeating the proposals of Jimmy:

-- put in 8GB of Ram, exact specs, good brand, see Crucial or OWC.

-->> Absolutely uninstall the WD software: it is really counterproductive and hampers the excellent Apple drivers.

-- Remove all entries in SystemPreferences->Users&Groups->LoginItems, with the minus sign underneath and restart.

-- Don't use Realplayer until you have more Ram; It is not proven that it is ElCapitan compatible yet. Better even: uninstall it.

-- In Finder selct your HomeFolder and then the GO menu then hold alt/option key and choose Library:

in there open the InternetPlug-ins folder and delete both plugins in there.

-- Flip4Mac is not supported anymore, and you really don't need it I guess.

    After uninstalling software: restart.

You can also get rid of this leftover from the DotMac years:

    com.apple.CSConfigDotMacCert-@me.com-SharedServices.Agent.plist

The OS tries to load it each time you log in, but it fails. It isn't likely causing any problems, but it should have been vanquished years ago.

In Finder, hold down the Option key and select Library from the Go Menu.

Open the LaunchAgents folder and find that file.

    Move it to the Trash.

Thanks to everyone for their helpful advice.  I now have 8GB of RAM and the beach balling only occurs in Excel.

    My problem has been solved.
