Jul 25, 2016 11:21 AM in response to tobyricby poikkeus1,Since you don't seem to have access to the "About This Mac" menu, it may be harder to find out the OS version. It you can, press Command- i on the HD icon; the OS version will appear in Info.
You can also find out the OS by accessing the Apple Communities BIo page. Maybe you didn't update the info, but it might give you a hint on the OS. You can access the page from any online computer.
If your HD is fully backed up, so you should be able to boot into your previous OS without any complications. You shouldn't have to know the OS.

Jul 25, 2016 12:04 PM in response to tobyricby K Shaffer,Depending on how you go about restoring a working OS X on a new hard drive
the option to see if another system is available via your purchase record via the
Mac App Store would or could give evidence of an option.
One way, the original OS X (if available) may be loaded; not a later upgrade.
The other way, (and perhaps only one) may be to re-download the last OS X
system that had been installed on the computer.

a system or get a new one, the replacement hard drive requires a reformat first.
The online options are normally accessed by the Recovery partition selection.
{Another option may be to arrange appointment and see if Apple Genius can help.}
