Q: Final Cut Pro - how do I stop a transition changing the background to black?

I have a video which has empty space above and below the video in Final Cut Pro. The default colour seems to be set to black, but I would like it to be white.

I have therefore inserted a 'Gap' generator below the video and changed it to be white. That works perfectly until the video hits the 'cross dissolve' transition at the end, at which point it changes the colour above and below the video back to black.

How can i make it so the colour above and below the video is always white?

Thanks very much in advance

It depends on the transition, but for most the default color is nothing. It's empty. You could put a color generator underneath the transition. Not sure what you mean by the color above. Maybe post a screen shot. The color generator may work, depending on which actual transition you're using. They're all built differently.

Hi Tom, thank you for your reply.

Please see the below images. You can see i have been able to make it white above and below the video (which is resolution 640x640 for Instagram), but then it turns black again once the transition kicks in. What am I doing wrong here? Thanks again

640x640. Is that what you want to output. You should then make a custom project which is that size.

This a cross dissolve? In the project you're transitioning from the still to black. At the start of the transition the incoming image, black, becomes the underlying layer. Try using Control-V to ramp the opacity.

You can also add a gap clip Opt-W after the still image and cross dissolve to that. That will also produce an opacity fade.

Best way, right-click on the dissolve and deselect transition from black.
