Q: Set up of new iMac from late 2006 iMac and external hard drive

I have a late 2006 iMac  2.16 GHz intel core 2 duo with 2.5GB on which I have Lion 10.7.5.  I don't think I can upgrade operating systems any further as they are not compatible.  I have an external hard drive which stores my photos, music etc as I just ran out of space on iMac.  I have decided to upgrade to new iMac.  I thought i would be able to plug in my external hard drive which also has my Time Machine back up and all the info would transfer to new iMac.  However the external hard drive is Firewire 800.  I connect it to old iMac with adapter to the Firewire 400 port.  The new iMac has USB3.

1.  how do I connect external drive to new iMac?  Can you get a Firewire 800 to USB3 cable (looking online I think not)

2.  reading online it seems to say you need to upgrade your software on your old iMac to match the new iMac otherwise the Time Machine cannot read over the information properly.  This is not possible on the old iMac, what do I do?

Im looking at my lovely new iMac and have not yet turned it on

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.5)
