I had my gmail account in Apple Mail. Suddenly it went 'offline.'
I tried to add it back but my username and/or password isn't being accepted.
I need to have the account under Apple Mail.
iMac, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)
What does Mail/Window/Connection Doctor Show? If the server is red, select it and look at the Show Details box.

Delete the password from Keychain Access (Applications/Utilities). While there, Keychain Access menu First Aid.

The only solution I found was first adding and then removing 2 step verification.
After that I was able to add gmail to my Apple Mail.
Very frustrating, though.
