Q: Kernel panic every few minutes - Mid 2014 rMBP El capitan 10.11.6

Hello, 2 days ago my Macbook randomly restarted with a kernel panic for the first time ever. When it booted back up after 1-3 minutes it would restart again, over and over. I managed to boot it in safe mode and install all updates, repaired the disk in recovery mode (It did not find any errors) and also ran a hardware diagnostic check, again not finding any errors. It then stopped happening and I used it throughout the next day with no problems until aagain at night the constant errors started again. I tried doing all of the above again and it did not fix it. Today I have just booted it up for the first time and again am stuck in this loop.

Can anyone tell me what these error codes mean or give me any insight into how I can fix it? I would reinstall osX however I don't have an external hard drive (I'm going to buy one tomorrow to try and reinstall it) and I don't have an Apple Store nearby.

Thanks

Here are the two error codes I seem to get:

Uninstall SmoothMouse, including com.cyberic.SmoothMouse in the System/Library/Extensions/ folder. Then restart the computer in Safe Mode then restart normally.

If SmoothMouse does not have an uninstaller or instructions on uninstalling, then see the following:

    Basics for Uninstalling Software

Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash.  Applications may create preference files that are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder.  Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space.  If you want you can look for them in the above location and delete them, too.

Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application. If you cannot find the uninstaller then you could download the freeware, Easy Find, to locate files that need to be removed. The places you need to search include:

    1. /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder. Check if the application has created a folder then delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder.
    2. Applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item.  Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder or the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder.  Log In Items are set in the Users & Groups preferences.  Open it inSystem Preferences, then click on the LogIn Items tab.  Select the item from the list and click on the Delete [-] button to remove it.
    3. Some software use startup daemons or agents.  Look for them in /Library/LaunchAgents/ and /Library/LaunchDaemons/ or in /Home/Library/LaunchAgents/.

Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder.  Usually with the same name as the program or the developer.  The item generally has a ".pkg" extension.  Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.

There are many utilities that can uninstall applications.  Here is a selection:

    1. AppZapper
    2. AppDelete
    3. Hazel
    4. AppCleaner
    5. CleanApp
    6. iTrash
    7. AppBolish
    8. AppUninstaller
    9. Uninstaller

A kernel panic is most often caused by a hardware glitch, such as RAM that freaks out or is slightly off spec. It can be cause by a software glitch, but that is not as likely as a hardware glitch. Until it happens three times in one week, you shouldn't loose any sleep over it.

I suspect that your kernel panics are a result of the OS X 10.11.6 update. I recommend that you backup your drive to an external drive as a clone. Once you have a backup you can now reinstall OS X.

You can boot from the clone or Recovery drive and select to 1) reinstall El Capitan over your internal drive or 2) erase the drive and do a clean install of El Capitan. Do not erase unless you have a backup of your data.

Go to App Store > Purchases > find El Capitan and select to download again. If you can boot from the clone this will allow you to do the install while booted from the clone. It's possible you will not be able to boot from the clone. If this happens you can boot from Recovery Drive and select to Reinstall OS X

    Create a Clone backup:

A clone is an exact bootable copy of your internal drive. Unlike standard copying of all files to another drive, the clone software copies hidden files along with other in-use files that are not available  when you copy over files to another drive.

The first step in solving kernel panics is to remove any third-party extensions and associated peripherals if any. The next step is to remove other additions that are not loaded during a safe mode startup.

If your computer doesn't panic immediately at startup, then there is a fairly good chance the panic is caused by a software glitch that in turn triggers a hardware panic. This could include RAM with a defective memory chip. This can generate random panics that only occur whenever something in the running software tries to access that part of the memory map that is defective. It only takes one bad bit or byte. Similarly, a disk drive going bad can cause a panic. So this is where you start first, not with erasing the drive and reinstalling OS X. I would hold up on that.

Please remove "SmoothMouse" and see whether the panics stop.

Any third-party software that doesn't install from the App Store or by drag-and-drop into the Applications folder, and uninstall by drag-and-drop to the Trash, is a system modification.

Whenever you remove system modifications, they must be removed completely, and the only way to do that is to use the uninstallation tool, if any, provided by the developers, or to follow their instructions. If the software has been incompletely removed, you may have to re-download or even reinstall it in order to finish the job.

I never install system modifications myself, and except as stated in this comment, I don't know how to uninstall them. You'll have to do your own research to find that information.

Here are some general guidelines to get you started. Suppose you want to remove something called “BrickMyMac” (a hypothetical example.) First, consult the product's Help menu, if there is one, for instructions. Finding none there, look on the developer's website, say www.brickmymac.com. (That may not be the actual name of the site; if necessary, search the Web for the product name.) If you don’t find anything on the website or in your search, contact the developer. While you're waiting for a response, download BrickMyMac.dmg and open it. There may be an application in there such as “Uninstall BrickMyMac.” If not, open “BrickMyMac.pkg” and look for an Uninstall button. The uninstaller might also be accessed by clicking the Customize button, if there is one.

Back up all data before making any changes.

You will generally have to restart the computer in order to complete an uninstallation. Until you do that, there may be no effect, or unpredictable effects.

If you can’t remove software in any other way, you’ll have to erase and install OS X. Never install any third-party software unless you're sure you know how to uninstall it; otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve.

Trying to remove complex system modifications by hunting for files by name often will not work and may make the problem worse. The same goes for "utilities" such as "AppCleaner" and the like that purport to remove software.
