Mail.app and Verizon / Yahoo email account setup

I've searched and searched on here and still can't find a proper (or updated) answer to the question. (Newest answers I found were for 10.4.4 involving keychain access-which I tried...)

Why won't my @verizon.net account work with Mail.app?

I can login using verizon's online mail, but can't use the verizon-supplied settings to receive the mail through mail.app.

incoming.yahoo.verizon.net
outgoing.yahoo.verizon.net

Couldn't find what port settings to use...

Any error message provided when the account is checked for new mail and if so, what?

The default incoming mail server port for a POP type account is 110 when not using SSL (which is used automatically by the Mail.app and all other email clients when selecting POP as the account type). SSL is not supposed to use with a Verizon/Yahoo account.

Did you enter the portion of your email address in front of the @ sign only as the account's user name?

Thanks for the response.
I think I've tried just about every combo of username and ports.

Tried my username and my username@verizon.net. They say you don't need the @verizon part, but some threads on here say it works.

Tried ports 110, 25 and 587 in various combinations. Nothing worked.

Was on with Verizon "help" and the guy pretty much yelled at me, saying that it must be something I was doing.

Do you have to quit mail and restart after each setting change? I'm going to try that. I'm about at the end of my rope.

I think I might have found a solution. For some reason, it appears the outgoing mail server doesn't like to have the same login as the DSL setup account. I switched my outgoing account to a secondary account (my setup account is jsichol, but I used joesichol as my outgoing.)

(It is working as of now, but I've seen others on here who got it to work for a couple of days before it crapped out.)

I am actually using the verizon account linked with a yahoo account, so my ingoing and outgoing accounts are *coming.yahoo.verizon.net.

I really hope this works and that others find this thread useful.

I'm on Verizon DSL, in Richmond, Virginia.

Try this. I just deciphered my friend's Verizon DSL account and it is working. In MAIL Preferences select ACCOUNTS;ACCOUNT INFORMATION. Highlight the account (if you have more than one) that you wish to set the SMTP for. Click the bottom "Server Settings..." Button. Set your Outgoing Mail Server as outgoing.yahoo.verizon.net with the server port at 25 and make sure the SSL box is unchecked. Select AUTHENTICATION by PASSWORD and enter your Verizon User Name as the name before the "@" sign. Then enter your Verizon password in the Password box. Save it and good luck. As I said, it's working for me. Hope it does the same for you.
