Q: "This Mac can't connect to iCloud because of a problem with..."

Hi,

I am having problems with iCloud on my MacBook Air (13-inch, Mid 2011. OS X El Capitan 10.11.6).

Each time I turn my MacBook on it prompts me with the following error message "This Mac can't connect to iCloud because of a problem with... [my Apple ID email]" and asks me to open iCloud preferences to fix this problem. I open iCloud preferences and it asks for my Apple ID Password. Once this is entered, everything seems to work ok. The problem is that it occurs EVERY time I turn my laptop on (from a shut down, not from sleep).

I have tried signing out of iCloud and signing back in. I have also tried this suggestion;

http://www.ordinarycoder.com/fix-this-mac-cant-connect-to-icloud/

but both of these have not worked.

Does anyone have a fix/solution to this?

Thanks in advance,

Andrew

Remove the iCloud account, then reboot. Do NOT try signing back in until after you reboot the machine.

    After rebooting, re-add the account.

Thanks for your reply KiltedTim. Sorry I should have been more clear. When I said "I have tried signing out of iCloud and signing back in." I did both that and also as you suggest removing the iCloud account, rebooting and then signing back in. Problem still persists.

Please back up all data before proceeding.

Launch the Keychain Access application in any one of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

Select the login keychain from the list on the left side of the Keychain Access window. If your default keychain has a different name, select that.

If the lock icon in the top left corner of the window shows that the keychain is locked, click to unlock it. You'll be prompted for the keychain password, which is the same as your login password, unless you've changed it. If you have changed the keychain password, it will never unlock automatically unless you change its password back to the login password.

Right-click or control-click the login entry in the list. From the menu that pops up, select

              Change Settings for Keychain "login"

In the sheet that opens, uncheck both boxes, if not already unchecked.

If you use iCloud Keychain, open the iCloud pane in System Preferences and uncheck the Keychain box. You'll be prompted to delete the local iCloud keychain. Confirm. Then re-check the box. Follow one of the procedures described in this support article to set up iCloud Keychain on an additional device.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.

Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem.

Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.

Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.

The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

Test while in safe mode. Same problem?

After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

    Hi Linc Davis,

Thank you for getting back to me about this and sorry that it has taken me a while to reply.

Quick question about your note- I am not sure if I have a firmware password set. Sorry if this sounds basic, but how do I check for this.

I have FireVault enabled, but I am running on OS X 10.11.6, is that ok? I also do not have a software RAID.

    Cheers,

    Andrew

    Hi Everyone,

Thank you for all your help and suggestions. It appears that this issue has sorted itself out on its own as for the past few days I haven't received this error message when I start up my Macbook.

I'll let you know if it comes back, but for the time being it seems to be ok!

    Cheers again,

    Andrew
