Alarm playing out even with earphones in

When I have my earphones plugged into my iphone and an alarm set, when the alarm goes off the sound goes off both for the earphones and out from the regular iphone speakers to the rest of the world quote unquote.

Is there anyway to have this just play through headphones?

I believe that the only way to hear the alarm sound only via headphones would be if you used the third party alarm app from the AppStore. In that case the sound played is being seen by your phone as media, not the alarm itself, so it will go only through your headphones. But remember that alarm will only go off if you keep the app open.
