Q: Rebuild recovery partion

Hi all,

Since building my macbook pro from a time machine backup, I have no recovery partition. Not sure if the time machine recovery is the cause, or that the guy who had this (work) laptop before me accidently wiped it.

I've tried using the "Recovery Partition Creator" script repeatedly, but this hasn't worked. It's getting quite urgent to get recovery back as I'm running into several issues that require me to have the partition:

  • Disk errors on my internal drive that need fixed
  • Need to encrypt my hard drive
  • Trying to resize my internal disk so I can install El Capitain next to my current OS X. I need to test before I lose access to work functionality (previous version could not be installed as it doesn't like our proxy for example).

Happy to go all the way to "clean" and then recover bits from tiem machine, but no clue how to get things right :-(

Any ideas?

I sense that you are not the first user or 'owner' of this MBP.  If that is that case, I suggest the following:

    Backup all of your data.

Erase the HDD and boot into Internet recovery (OPTION + COMMAND + R) which will connect you to the Apple servers.  By following the directions, you will be able to erase the HDD and install the the original OSX that the MBP came with.  The recovery partition should be created.  ( I am assuming that the MBP is a late 2011 model or newer.)

Install a newer OSX (if applicable).

    Reinstall your user data.

    Ciao.

What OS are you currently running?

You said you tried the Recovery Partition Creator utility. So, you must have the OS X install app in your /Applications folder or some other folder. If so, just launch it and reinstall OS X on top of itself. You won't harm any of your user accounts, data or apps.

If you don't have the install app for your OS, then go to the App Store / Purchases tab to redownload and install your current OS on top of itself. This is the easiest way to get a Recovery HD written without a 3rd party utility.

I'm surprised the Recovery Partition Creator utility (v4.03) didn't work. I used it yesterday with the Install OS X El Capitan.app install file for 10.11.6 and it worked fine. I don't think it works with CoreStorage or Fusion Drives.

You can re-download the installer and make a bootable SDcard/USB flash drive.

I thought it might be something along these lines. Will give it a whirl this weekend.

    thanx!
