How to stop windows sliding between open applications

There's an irritating scenario whereby open application windows slide and disappear instead of (as I want) staying on the desktop,

Can anyone assist in telling how to stop this considerable irritation, please?

Regards,

OK, I'll try to explain a little better.

BTW, this only happens on my iMac (10.5.11) not on this MBA running under same OS.

Eg, I have Safari running with an active window. I then open a Word document or a second browser, or any other application it seems and the "other" window slides off-screen. This is irritating and makes transferring from one open app window to another a pain especially when information needs to be cross referenced.

I hope this helps clarify the scenario. I can't think of a better way of describing it.

I've had a look at Mission Control but cannot see anything there to change this. Maybe further help on this??

In addition to all the good information you have already received:

Click and hold the Safari dock choose Options and under "Assign To", choose "None". If this problem also happens with other applications, do the same for each of them.

Then go to Mission Control, move your cursor the top area where the Desktops are displayed; for every Desktop in there but "Desktop 1" or (if you see it), "Dashboard", click the circled X at the top left to close it. You now have only one Desktop where all your applications reside.

Remember, as you have been told before, if you use apps in full screen mode, they will get their own Desktops.
