Q: iPhoto '11

i have a Macbook Pro 13" which came with OS Snow Leopard. i recently updated to OS X El Capitan and noticed that iPhotos has been replaced by Photos. i initially had the iPhotos 8.1.2 version and need to update to iPhoto '11 in order to sync the pictures on my blackberry. however, each time i try to update it, it tells me that there is no iPhoto in the store for my country. i tried changing countries but it's still unavailable. what can i do?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

Unless you previously had some version of iPhoto 9 on your MBP and had updated it at some time via the App Store you will not be able to obtain iPhoto 9.6.1.

iPhoto is no longer supported by Apple.  It is no longer able to order prints, books, cards or calendars from  Apple's Print Product Store.

Your only recourse is to downgrade you system back to Snow Leopard via your Time Machine or other backup or move forward and use Photos. Have you tried using Photos to sync with your phone?

You might have to use iTunes to sync selected albums of Photos to your phone.

There is nothing you can do. Apple stopped selling iPhoto. You need to upgrade to iPhoto 9.6.1, but this version of iPhoto has never been available outside the App Store like older iPhoto versions.

The last chance to purchase the upgrade you need was last year, before OS X 10.10.3 and the new Photos for Mac were released.

You can only revert your operating system to a system that still supports iPhoto 8.1.2 or migrate your iPhoto Libraries to the new Photos for Mac.  Since iPhoto is no longer supported at all ( the Places feature does no longer work, because Apple cancelled the access to the Places servers, no more service for print products) I strongly recommend to migrate your iPhoto Library to Photos and start using Photos. It is different from iPhoto, but at least as powerful.

Thanks a bunch. This was very helpful. I guess I just have to move on. My phone is a blackberry and cannot sync with Photos. The desktop software keeps telling me to update my iPhotos to version 9 or later. I was never one to update anything before I updated the OS some months ago.

Thanks. But can I get the version I need from someone else who maybe updated their iPhotos to version 9.6.1 before updating to OS X El Capitan?

That is a question of the license. Another family member who uses iPhoto 9.6.1 is entitled to install iPhoto 9.6.1 on any Mac this person owns or controls. If you grant this family member the use of your Mac it can install iPhoto on your Mac using the own Apple ID.

A possible workaround is to see if Image Capture can recognize your phone and download the image files to a folder on the Desktop.  From there you can import them into a Photos library.
