80 GB iPod Classic, Windows 10 sync problem

First, my apologies if this is an old question. There are so many discussion threads that it's not easy to find the right one.


My 80GB iPod Classic worked with Windows XP and then Windows 7. When I got a new computer and upgraded to Windows 10 the iPod was seen by iTunes but would not sync. This lasted until I uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes (version 12.4.2.4). Now it doesn't see the iPod at all.


One of the possible solutions I've seen is to unplug all USB devices, but since this means the keyboard and mouse it would be awkward.


What do you suggest as a solution?

Thanks for your reply. From the link, the version of iTunes is 12.4.2.4, downloaded this morning. The iPod is on. There was no "Trust this computer" alert even when the software was seeing the iPod. Unplugging all USB devices would be a problem, but I could try it, along with a different cable. As a last resort I'll go through installing iTunes on my laptop to see if that makes any difference.


There was no USB connection sound, and Windows should be up to date, but I will check that.


How do you put the iPod in disk mode?

One thing to consider as you follow turingtest2's always-sound advice... I ran into a somewhat similar situation back in January, when I had to get a new laptop, which brought me into the wonderful world of Windows 10 (from Vista). Now I don't know which computer you got, but I'm assuming it's a fairly new one... which begs the question:

Is your new computer's architecture 64-bit? And if so, did you download the corresponding 64-bit version of iTunes? In the end, it may not make a difference, but the more "compatible" your hardware and software are, the less the chance that issues will result.


(How to find your "architecture", if needed: Open Windows Explorer and right-click on your computer's name in the left-hand pane (usually something like "This PC", if you haven't named it something else). In the resulting pop-up window, under "system", you'll see "system type", and that tells you whether it's 32-bit or 64-bit.)

Thanks. That procedure had come up in a different context. Now, just to make things a little more surreal, after shutting down iTunes software and the iPod, restarting the computer, disconnecting and reconnecting everything, reconnecting the iPod started File Explorer which saw the iPod, then iTunes started and now it says it's synchronizing. Since there are roughly 14,500 files in 1147 folders it's hard to know if this sync is for real but I'll let it run and hope for the best.

The new computer is indeed 64-bit, and Apple website went to that choice automatically. It's a rehabbed corporate machine that seems to be about two years old.


And as you see from my answer to turingtest2, just the mention of his name seems to have scared the computer, software and iPod into working right. Or so it seems if this "Synchronizing" message is real.

I still think it was the sound of your name that scared the iPod and iTunes into working right. It took roughly an hour, but the iPod sync went through without a hitch (as far as I can tell) and tunes are cranking out on the iPod dock in my shop.


Thank you, turingtest2 and lonewolf3898 for your help. Up to now my experience with Alan Turing was limited to a book by Neal Stephenson called Cryptonomicon, and with the lone wolf it had to do with my older son who feels that the wolf is his spirit animal.
