I use Apple Maps all of the time for no-hands directions while I'm driving. But I also like to see the route that's been chosen to see if another route may work better for me. So not having the actual map, I'd be stuck. Let's see if we can get your Apple Maps working like it should. Remember to test the Maps app after every step.
Use Maps on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch -- Since there's no mention of any troubleshooting you've done on your own, I'm including this article for your use.
Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch -- Never underestimate the power of a good restart.
How to back up your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch -- Since Apple Maps is part of the iOS, it may be that there was a problem when your iPhone was updated. Since the following steps will completely erase your iPhone, I highly recommend a fresh backup to make sure you don't lose any of your personal information.
Use iTunes on your Mac or PC to restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings -- iTunes is needed to install the iOS to your phone. Using your iPhone's Settings only removes your personal information and not the operating system.
Once your iPhone starts back up again, choose to set it up as a new iPhone so you can test the issue without anything else. Feel free to log into iTunes & App Store and iCloud if you'd like. See if Apple Maps now includes an actual map instead of just a grid. If it's working like it should, continue onto the next step.
Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch from a backup -- This is how you add your personal information back to your iPhone.
Have a great day!

Jul 27, 2016 9:35 AM in response to hatinhampsteadby Courcoul,While I don't use Apple Maps very often, when regularly using other apps that offer location data thru map displays (i.e., Weather Underground's storm tracker map), every so often I too get just the grid and no map data. Usually if I do a pinch-to-zoom, a refresh occurs and the full map finally gets displayed. A nuisance, but at least a workaround.
I've suspected that our location might have a bearing on the problem.
