I have a MacBook Air 13 inch, early 2014, & starting from a month or two ago up until now there has been a problem with it lagging (it gets much worse when its charging, & the charger gets very hot, this is also new), the built-in trackpad sometimes not responding, & now recently the built-in keyboard also has issues with it not responding. Also from the time when these issues popped up, I had finally updated to 10.11.5 El Capitan, not sure if this is related however.
Whenever these issues come up, I shut down/restart the Mac, however this doesn't always correct it, and if it does, the lagging and unresponsive trackpad/keyboard will pop up again within an hour or so.
I've tried restarting PRAM, but no improvement.
As for other information that may be related (based on the answers I've seen of a similar question on a different board, I'm not really sure if it is of any use), I do have a Wacom (Bamboo Pen, CTL-470) that I plug in quite often, and i have dropped/physically damaged my MacBook once (though this was long ago, and there were no immediate issues after it).
