Q: iPod: how to solve: sceen shows horizontal lines only (nano 2nd gen)

Hi there,

could someone please suggest how to solve this issue?

I've got an iPod nano 2nd generation. Sometimes, the screen starts to display only horizontal lines (please see pictures attched for example). They change when I click around in the menu (buttons are still operational). They would go away when connecting the iPod to my PC and iTunes, or when leaving the iPod in my drawer for days or weeks (I'm not that into music and I got this device in a raffle) - so this didn't seem to be a permanent fault. But now even that won't help. I tried resetting (pushing select and menu for 6 seconds) but nothing else so far, for concern of causing destruction. I tried finding a similar issue online, but haven't found anything that looks similar.

How could I solve this issue permanently? Please reply with anything that will or might help - this is the first Apple device I own and I've no idea how to go about fixing these.

Kind regards,

C.

    Hello Contiali,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

Based on your post, I see that horizontal lines are displaying on your iPod nano 2nd generation. I know how important it is to make sure that you have an iPod that works as it should. I have something that I would like you to try.

Try and restore your iPod to factory settings. A factory restore erases the information and settings. If your music is in iTunes on your computer, you can sync and add the music back after the factory restore (you also should be able to plug it into iTunes and then right click on your device to create a backup).

The following articles will help you restore your iPod to factory settings and then sync your music:

Use iTunes on your Mac or PC to restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings

Sync your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iTunes on your computer using USB

After that, test and see if you get the same horizontal lines.

    Best Regards.

    Hello Joseph,

thanks for your reply, your empathy and the guidelines to restore my iPod to factory settings. I've just carried out three times the instructions in the first link you gave me. The issue remains. Is there anything else I can do, please?

The line pattern changes and goes vertical when I shake or tap the iPod (I've read in some online forum that this might solve similar issues). Please see attached photo for the current status

    Best regards,

    R.

Thanks for the recommendation, Steven. I've just gotten off the phone with Apple Support. This is very likely to be a display issue and the display needs to be replaced. Unfortunately, Apple only provides support for devices for about five years and they have no spare parts available as of today (2016), thus recommending me to source spare parts from vintage devices.
