Q: new mail going to archive instead of inbox

Recently, new emails are missing my inbox and going, instead, to my Archive mailbox. This is new behavior and not listed in any FAQ's on mail behavior. What could be causing this?

Mac Pro, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6)

Did you set new "Rules" (see in Mail-Preferences)?
If so, delete the new rules.

No I didn't have any rules before and have no new rules now.
