Q: Managing Content for Kids

I have an iPad 2 mini running ios 9.3.2 . I would like to allow my daughter to use this iPad for select music in my iTunes library. I have transferred over the approved content. However, when wifi is turned on, on our home network, all albums in our iTunes library are displayed and available for download... minus the songs which have explicit lyrics. (I already changed the Restrictions to disallow explicit content). You can still download all the other songs in the album without the explicit "E"... something I'd like to prevent. I don't want any albums to be displayed on the ipad except the ones I selected.

Neither Turning off "Sync with this iPad over wifi" in iTunes on my desktop, nor selecting "manually manage music and videos" prevents the display of the entire library.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

M

See, "What You Can Restrict" here >  Use Restrictions on your iPad

I think the answer to that is no, you cannot prevent that with the options available under Restrictions.

Might the answer be Family Sharing?

I don't personally use it, but I see in the bottom paragraph here:  "Content can be hidden by family members ...".

As follow up I got off the chat with an apple representative. It doesn't appear that there is a way to only allow downloaded music to be displayed, if the wifi is on, except by using the toggle switch inside the center/top dropdown menu of the Music app, last option "Only Downloaded Music."

This however cannot be protected behind Restrictions. It seems like an easy add to have a Restriction that "grey's out" this switch only allowing downloaded music to be displayed.

The recommended approach from Apple was to always log out of Apple ID on the device before returning to the kids. But his makes it challenging to add new content. I have to first log in, then enter password when buying the app or music, then log out again. A little clunky.

My understanding is that family sharing is intended to begin to give autonomy and deal with ownership on new content being purchased. The fix I'm looking for has to do with restricting certain music that I already own.

MC, that's what I suspected and thus my previous reply. I agree with you fully, it does seem like a good idea as I often see posts about additional options on Restrictions. I suggest that you provide feedback to Apple using the form below. They will not respond but they read all and if enough users ask they may well implement the suggestion. They do listen and read all of those reports (not just saying as I am just a user like you). Regards, elcpu
