Q: All internet-based apps suddenly slow; fan speed high

All web-based functions drastically slowed down on Sunday July 24

  • by "slow" I mean 20-100 seconds just to connect (once connected, load times are normal, even fast)
  • affected apps: Safari, Firefox, iTunes, App Store, etc.
  • this happens on all the wifi networks I use (each with it's own ISP, the speeds of which range from 25mbps/10mbps up to 100+mbps/100+mbps)
  • whenever I am using web-based apps, the fan turns on and runs at full at or near full speed (if the apps are merely open, but not actively connecting/reconnecting to anything, then the fans slow down.)

When using web-based apps, the following processes run around or above 100% CPU (in order of frequency):

  • Safari Networking
  • acwebsecagent
  • nsurlsessiond
  • syncdefaultsd
  • cloudd

None of the following troubleshooting has helped (I tested after each change):

The problem goes away when I...

  1. run Safari in a guest user
  2. run Safari from recovery mode

Other info:

Mid-2013 Macbook Air

OS X 10.11.6

This is my third day of troubleshooting. I really need to get back to work, (but work requires internet apps to work). I’m desperate.

MacBook Air, OS X El Capitan (10.11.5), null

shut down and disconnect all external devices

    reset the SMC

    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295

    then boot into safe mode

Try safe mode if your Mac doesn't finish starting up - Apple Support

    then reboot normally

if the problem persists you can post an etrecheck here for further analysis by the volunteers

    JimmyCMPIT,

    (1) Thanks for responding.

    (2) I reset the SMC

    (3) I booted into safe mode

    (4) I rebooted normally

    The behavior continues. Worse,...

    (5) Now some websites are not either (a) not loading or (b) not loading correctly (e.g., webages load raw-text without images, styling, etc.).

I'm not familiar with etrecheck.com. It is loading now. It might be awhile until it loads and I can do something with the website.

I also just tried all the data/cache clearing recommended by Linc Davis here: Re: Safari Web Content not responding - Yosemite.

    The behavior continues.

    More detail:

    - ping times are all over 400ms.

    - (I will post a few dozen lines of log when I use another web-based app)

Here are the logs from around the last time I tried to load a webpage in Safari.

It was around 11:24:40 (plus or minus a bit). The webpage took a long time to connect (almost 100 seconds) and the fan kicked on.

I've decided to reinstall the OS (without restoring any users or settings from a Time Machine backup) — using this method (more or less): http://www.thesafemac.com/how-to-reinstall-mac-os-x-from-scratch/

I've been rebuilding things from scratch since yesterday evening.

    Everything works again (so far).

Thanks for those who tried to help.

I'm now having this problem on a *second* machine. I've resintalled and migrated everything but settings, but it's still an issue.

How can I locate the problem in the user to fix it? I don't have time for another fresh install like last time.
