Q: Convert iMessage email to Apple ID

So currently my wife and I use the same Apple ID, but her email is used for iMessage and Facetime.  I'd like to set up her own Apple ID, using her email, but it says it's already used for an account.  However, when I try and retrieve a password, it says there is no account with that name.

Sooooo, her email is sort of in limbo....   Is there a way to break her email away from my account so that we can set up her own account for family sharing.

Thanks

To change the Apple ID go to the following locations under Settings, sign out of all of them and then sign back in:

iCloud, iTunes & App Store, Messages, FaceTime, and Game Center if you use it.

I Assume that you tried but I will ask anyway. Did you go to the settings on your device for each app and remove her email address from both apps?

yes, but it shows up in every device we own, and probably some we no longer own......    Do I need to sign every device out while I set up the new account???

Let me preface this with I'm not sure that this will work. I just don't know where else to start. I am talking about her email address, not yours. You don't want to change your Apple ID. You want to disassociate her email address from your ID.

For the devices that you no longer own, I hope that they were totally erased before you got rid of them. For the devices that you do own, that's what I would try. Remove her email address from FaceTIme and iMessage everywhere.

As I suggested above on the devices you still own:

To change the Apple ID go to the following locations under Settings, sign out of all of them and then sign back in:

iCloud, iTunes & App Store, Messages, FaceTime, and Game Center if you use it.

Note also that all the apps on any iGadget she owns under the shared AppleID will be essentially lost. Access and rights-to-use of apps in the App Store is bound to the AppleID, not the device. If it is wiped as part of the process of disassociating it from the old AppleID, the apps will no longer be available until they are reacquired on the new one (including paying if needed). If the device is not wiped, the lingering apps will never be updatable ever again until removed and reacquired under the new AppleID.

He wants to remove her email address from his Apple ID. Obviously you think that he needs to sign out of his ID first? You could very well be right, but I don't see how he will be able to remove her email address from his ID if he isn't signed in.

Heaven knows it won't be the first thing that I don't understand about Apple ID's.

So currently my wife and I use the same Apple ID, but her email is used for iMessage and Facetime

I am slow this morning, I'll wake up in a bit...     IMO he needs to disassociate all ID connections -  sign out of all places where her email is now used, i.e., iMessage and Facetime above. Either that or I don't understand his issue. Then try to change the email address associated with his ID by using a browser and then relogging with his. He may have a problem IF her email is still associated with a device he no longer has possession of but Apple still has registered as a currently used ID. I'll reread all again.

LIke I said, you may very well be correct. I am a bit confused myself. The whole Apple ID thing can get so confusing, IMO. What you are suggesting is certainly worth a shot.

You are not the only one. Maybe the OP will pop back in with additional info. IMO iPhones that used to be rather simple are now a complex mess with more options than I can fathom or need but such is life in the fast changing world....

I will log out of every account possible when she gets home tonight and see if it "frees up" her email.  I can always use another email address...like most people I have many...but it avoids confusion to actually use one that she uses regularly.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll update later.
