Q: A weird bug right after updating to the latest Watch OS (2.2.2)

Hello,

I updated my apple watch to the latest OS few days back and i realized that from the moment i updated it, there was something wrong with it.

Firstly, the update took like good 20 minutes and my apple watch restarted like 3-4 times during the whole process. I thought it is normal.

But since then, it does not show any notifications on my watch at all. On some research, I found that turning off "Wrist Detection" did push the notifications to my watch but the "Stand" ring on my activity screen is frozen on 0 hrs since the day i updated it.

I turned my "Wrist Detection" on just to make sure that i dont play around with options. Another weird thing i am noticing right now is that if i am using my watch for anything and it's screen is on, and there is a notification (say from whatsapp, gmail or message), i instantly get the particular notifications on my apple watch like i used to get before the update.

I am confused whether this is due to some sort of incomplete or bugged update or it is just a software problem which i am unable to deal with.

A quick help is appreciated.

Thanks

    Hi

How notifications behave depends on the status of your devices and your settings. With Wrist Detection enabled, in order to bring notifications to your attention as soon as possible:

    - If your iPhone is unlocked, you will receive notifications on your iPhone instead of on your watch.

    - If your iPhone is locked or asleep and your watch is unlocked (regardless of whether the watch screen is asleep or awake) and on your wrist, you will receive notifications on your watch.

    - If your watch is locked or has Do Not Disturb enabled, notifications will go to your iPhone.

In respect of the issue with the Stand goal, try these steps:

    • On your iPhone in the Watch app, go to: My Watch > General > Wrist Detection - check that this is turned on.
    • If Passcode is enabled, check that you are unlocking your watch each day after placing it on your wrist.
    • On your iPhone, in the Watch app, go to: My Watch > Activity - check that Stand Reminders is turned on.

If that does not immediately resolve the issue, next try these steps, which have resolved the same issue for some other users:

    • On your iPhone, in the Watch app, go to: My Watch > Privacy > Motion & Fitness - turn Fitness Tracking off (or turn it on, if it is currently turned off).
    • Restart both devices by turning both off together, then restarting your iPhone first:
      • To turn your iPhone off: press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the red slider appears; drag it to turn off. To restart, press and hold the Sleep/Wake button.
      • To turn your watch off: press and hold the side button until you see the Power Off slider; drag it to turn off. To turn it back on: press and hold the side button until you see the Apple logo.
    • If you turned Fitness Tracking off in step 1, now return to the setting and re-enable it.

Thank you for a prompt response.

As per your instructions, i re-enabled fitness tracking on after restarting but the issue remains same.

To sum up my issue and make it more clear to you experts, i am gonna describe it below:

    • The watch gets and shows notifications normally while i am using it.
    • I tried resetting, re-pairing and even erasing all data and pairing it as a new watch, but the notifications are shown only when i turn "Wrist Detection" off. If i turn it on, i get notifications only when i am actually using my apple watch.
    • The stand up ring is still frozen to "0" hours given that i have been moving in my apartment even after re-enabling the fitness tracking.
    • Just to add, i updated my phone to the latest IOS (9.3.3) right after updating the watch OS (2.2.2)
    • This surely seems to be a software related issue since i doubt that the update was either broken in the middle while updating or maybe some sort of rare unfortunate scenario for me.

Thank you so much again for your quick response. Seeking a quick fix.

It sounds like your watch is not detecting your wrist and thus locking and preventing notifications from sending. Restart both your watch and iPhone. If the issue still persists, restore the watch. If it still persists, consider and Apple store appointment.

Given the steps that you have already tried, I suggest that you contact Apple Support (mail-in service may be available) or make a Genius Bar reservation with a view to having your watch checked (under warranty, if eligible):

To check your warranty status (the serial number is on the back of your watch):

    Thanks again for the suggestion.

I had a chat session with one of the Apple Support Staff members and he was pretty much convinced that the issue is not worth troubleshooting if a hard reset and a fresh pairing didn't help.

As i doubted, the problem seems to be with the wrist sensor itself. It can not detect my wrist anymore and hence, does not show any notification. This now makes sense why turning off "Wrist Detection" was pushing all notifications on both my phone and the watch. Because it did not require my wrist detection for notifications to push.

Everything seems logical till i realize that all this started right after i updated my watch's OS to 2.2.2 and its even more weird to think that a software did crash the functioning of a hardware sensor to the extent where now i have to get it repaired at the Apple store. I read some similar discussions and i know that i'm not alone. But if a software update can actually affect hardware to this extent, I think its time for the Apple coders to wake up. It may be rare but still counts!

I am gonna visit the nearest Apple service store and they will get it repaired.

    But the sheer fact that

On a lighter note, It's just the 5th month of my watch and i got Apple Care as well. So i am pretty much relaxed!

    Thanks again

    You're welcome!

If you have AppleCare+, keep in mind that it includes Express Replacement Service.

It may therefore be faster to arrange mail-in service with Apple Support, rather than visit an Apple Retail Store.
