Q: iCloud will not sync contacts & calendar to Outlook

I recently reinstalled Office 2016 on Windows 10. Actually, Microsoft did it for me.  They uninstalled iCloud as part of that process.  I have reinstalled iCloud but cannot get it to synchronize with Outlook.  I sign in to iCloud and check the box for "Contacts, Calendar and Tasks" and press Apply. All that happens is that iCloud unchecks the box and grays out Apply. If I repeat, it does not uncheck the box, but Apply is grayed out.  It has done nothing. Outlook shows no sign of the existence of iCloud, other than the add-in, which is active.

I have repeated this a bunch of times.  Twice iCloud did appear to be attempting to synchronize, but it hung up doing so. I left it running for 10 hours and it was still spinning.

Any ideas?

    Hi amarone58,

I understand that you are having some difficulties using iCloud with Outlook on your PC. I know it's nice for everything to sync well, so I'm happy to provide some direction to help with this.

You've done a great job already checking to ensure that the add-in is active, as that's a very important component for this process to work correctly. Please also check out the other steps that we have listed in our article here:

I have done all that. No difference. It seems as if the iCloud sync is failing immediately. Surely somewhere there is an error log explaining what is going wrong.

I am trying to install iCloud (5.2.1) on a brand new Win10 laptop (previously had iCLoud on Win7 laoptop that is working perfectly fine with Outlook 2016 (office 365 version of Outlook2016, where the Outlook, software runs on the laptop harddrive even if not connected to the office 365 cloud).  Installed went fine, iCloud drive and iPhoto work find on Win10 laptop.  Having same problems as amarone58:  cannot get "calendar, contacts, notes" in iCloud control panel to "finish" just has spinning wheel "setting up", goes on for hours.  I checked win10 task manager and after 5 min, iCloud is not doing anything.  Oddly enough, the Icloud plug in is showing in the Outlook 2016 "plug in" list, but there is no iCLoud ribbon button showing, and the Icloud files are not showing up in the calendar or contacts folders in Outlook.

I did look closely at the iCloud requirements:  https://support.apple.com/en-us/ht204230

and under Calendar, Contacts, Mail it it says this:

    outlook 2007 - 2016(footnote 2) or an up-to-date web browser.

(Footnote 2:  Outlook 2010 Personal Edition and Outlook Click-to-Run installations aren't supported)

So perhaps, the Office 365 version of Office 2016 is "click to run" and now iCloud 5.2.1 is NOT suppported for Calendar, Contacts, Notes?

Even though my win7 laptop has Office 2016/365, it originally had Office 2010 (CD version), an perhaps it was still compatible because I ended up with a hybrid when Office 2016/365 installed over it?

I had the exact same problem after Windows 10 updated to the "Anniversary update". I created a icloud.com email account (I never had to do this before) via my iphone, and enabled contacts and calendar for sync - and then the Windows client installed normally (ticked the box and it downloaded the info from icloud).

I should state that my AppleID (which logs in to icloud etc) is not an icloud.com address.

Do you have a icloud.com account set up?

The problem was indeed that Office was installed as Click to Run. I found instructions elsewhere in these forums as to how to reinstall Office from the command prompt and this solved the problem.
