Q: Bluetooth phone calling problem

This seems like a weird one; I hope someone has an idea for a solution. My Motorola H720 Bluetooth headset is paired with my iPhone 5S (iOS 9.3.3). Everything works 100% fine until the iPhone's telephone gets involved. I hear all the sounds generated by the iPhone itself, can use voice dialling, etc., but as soon as the telephone line is opened (i.e. the other party's phone starts ringing) .... silence. I know the phone is working, because if I switch the output back to "speaker" or "iPhone," I can hear whatever's on the other end — usually someone going "Hello? Hello?"

I've used this headset for a few years and have never had an issue until yesterday, shortly after installing 9.3,3.

What I've tried: restart iPhone, restart Motorola, reset Motorola, forget and re-pair devices, try a wired headset (works fine).

Again, any sounds originating with the iPhone itself, including music, come through fine. It's only sounds coming in through the telephone that it ignores.

Ideas?
