About a year ago I upgraded to the 4GB sticks of memory and the Samsung EVO detailed above. Ever since, I have had several kernel panics. Lately, the frequency has increased dramatically, with at least 1 per week. Do the details above shed any light on the cause? Should I be looking for something in particular in the kernel panic report? Thanks for any help.

See Mac OS X- How to log a kernel panic and post the log of your last kernel panic.

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode. Disconnect all third-party peripherals. While in safe mode do the panics stop? Now, reboot normally and see if the start again or have stopped. Re-connect the third-party peripherals. Now, what happens with the panics?

If the kernel panics occur always when you start up the computer then most likely you have bad memory or a bad HDD/SDD.

Thanks for the reply. I'll follow your advice.

To comment on your last statement...the kernel panics typically happen when I'm just browsing and the computer has been up and running for some time.

I'm not sure if this is of any consequence, but the SSD sounds like it's struggling at startup compared to the one it replaced.

Can you be more explicit about the SSD? SSDs don't make any sounds. Is it new? Did you partition and format it for the Mac before using it? What do you mean by "struggling?"

The SSD is about 11 months old. I formatted it for my Mac.

I assume it's the SSD that's making the noise at startup. It is the same noise the same laptop made with its HDD in it...except now it sounds like it's struggling sometimes when making the noise (by struggling, I mean it is not heard at the same tempo that it usually is and the sound is at a lower frequency) . It only makes the noise at startup.

Here's an old post with someone describing the same noise I'm hearing.

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/first-time-ssd-owner-and-its-making-stra nge-sounds.475124/

I have an audio recording of it but for some reason I cannot use the feature to attach a video file.

SSDs are "Solid State". That means no moving parts to make noise. Do you see signs that the SSD no longer is functioning at its past observed speed? If this is not an Apple Drive did you install TRIM? There are moving parts in the computer that may make noise such as the fans. If the computer still has a HDD in it, then it could be making noise. A failing monitor or some other failing component may make noise.

SSD drives have no means to make noises.

It is more likely you are hearing the DVD Reader at Startup.

If you want some help with kernel panic, you need to understand that kernel panic is not ONE problem, it is one of possibly Thousands of problems, and you should collect a kernel panic report and post it in its entirety.

If a kernel panic occurs, information is added to a log file in the folder /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports (Mac OS X v10.6), or later.

Please DO NOT post more than 20 lines of an Application panic reports or GPU hang report. They are interminable and useful only to the developer or Hardware designer.

The drive still works quickly. It is a Samsung SSD and I did not install TRIM. I was told it wasn't necessary but I can do so if that could be the issue. The noise isn't coming from the fans. The display is fine.

Any idea why the "insert video" icon is grayed out on my end? I could attach a video or audio file if I was able use it.

    Thanks again for the help.

    Applications
    Jul 27, 2016 6:52 PM in response to mike71

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.

Please launch the Console application in any one of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

    In the Console window, select

DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION â–¹ System Diagnostic Reports

(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

              View â–¹ Show Log List

    from the menu bar.

There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". Select the most recent one. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.

If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.

In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)

Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report.

I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.

When you post the report, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the text on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

If you have an account on Pastebin, please don't select Private from the Paste Exposure menu on the page, because then no one but you will be able to see it.

After paying very close attention to the location of the noise at startup, it does appear it is coming from the DVD reader. Thanks

You have the MacBookPro6,2—the Edsel of Macs. It may have the logic-board defect that was covered by a recall program that has now ended.

The model was discontinued in February 2011. It's now classified by Apple as a "vintage product." That means Apple will most likely refuse to fix it (but see the exceptions on the linked page.) In that case, you would have to go to an independent service provider. The part may no longer be available, or the repair may not be cost-effective.

Often the problems start after an OS upgrade. If the upgrade was recent, and you have backups, then you can revert to a previous OS X version.

Otherwise, make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider, to have the machine tested. The testing will be free at an Apple Store—unless Apple refuses even to look at the unit, which it might. The routine hardware diagnostics used by service providers do not detect the fault. There is a specific test for this issue called "VST" (for "Video System Test.") Ask for it. A "Failed" result means that the fault is present.

If you do decide to go to an independent service provider, be aware that the replacement part may also be defective. Some owners reported that they went through as many as three replacement boards before getting one that worked. Don't expect any help from Apple if you're charged several hundred dollars for another bad logic board and the provider won't replace it again.

If you don't want to take that risk, or if you don't like the price you're quoted, you may (or may not) be able to work around the problem by disabling automatic graphics switching. To use the discrete graphics processor, you'll need a third-party utility to switch to it manually.

Thanks for the help! Unfortunately, I was unaware of the recall. When I upgraded the memory and drive, I also upgraded to Yosemite, which is when the problems started. So my Mac's problems could very well be due to the logic board defect/recall/OS upgrade and not the hardware upgrade that I initially suspected. I'll take it into Apple and hope for the best. Thanks again!

The hardware upgrades could be causing other problems for all I know, but they didn't cause the panic that you reported here.

Could you tell that the kernel panic was caused by a logic board problem? Or could you just tell it wasn't caused by the upgrades and my particular model led you to believe the logic board may be an issue? I'm just curious if you saw something specific in the report that I can look for the next one happens so I can determine if it's due to the same issue.

p.s. my laptop gets VERY warm where the logic board is located. Are you aware if that's a symptom of the recall?
