Q: ios restore from backup

I have a full encrypted backup of an iPhone5 via iTunes made when the device was on iOS 9.3.2.

Will I be able to install this backup on an iPhone 6s (or 7) running 9.3.3 or even 10 (when that comes out) ? So, is the backup just a backup of the data and settings or is it constrained by the OS version in that my "old" backup will not install onto a device running a newer OS?

iPhone 5, iOS 9.3.2

It is backup of data and settings. The iOS is not part of the backup. You can restore the backup of a device on an older iOS to a device that has an equal or newer iOS, but you cannot restore the backup of a device with a newer iOS on a device with an older iOS. In other words, you can restore the backup of the iPhone 5 done with iOS 9.3.2 to a device with iOS 9.3.2 or iOS 9.3.3, or if you wait until the public release of iOS 10.

    Hope that explains it.

Backups does not include iOS System software.

Make sure you can remember the password of your encrypted backup for restoring on a new device.

Thanks for the quick help to both  ChrisJ4203 and ckuan - when I get that new device I will try setting it up with my backup and hopefully all the Podcasts etc. will show up just fine!

Podcasts are not part of the backup. They are in your iTunes library, which would be synced over when you restore the backup. Anything that is part of iTunes, such as music, podcasts, apps, etc. are not included in the backup. It is assumed they are in your library and would be synced back during the restore. Just the settings and app data are part of the actual backup. Also, if you are using iCloud, your calendar and contacts would not be in the backup either. You may want to take a look at this support document which explains what is included in the different backups.  About backups for iOS devices - Apple Support

I have a lot of podcasts and since I don't save them to iCloud, would that mean they were only saved to the library on the physical iPhone - and they are not in the backup that I have saved ? Does that mean that unless I can get this original iPhone back, the podcasts are gone ? More importantly, when I reinstall this backup onto a new device, will those podcasts not be available ?

They would be in your purchased list in iTunes. It sounds as if you do not sync or transfer purchases to your iTunes library on the computer. If that is the case, you would have to download them again to the device.
