Q: Older iPod not recognized by laptop. Suggestions?

I have an older 8GB iPod Touch. The screen has the "connect to iTunes" picture. It is attached to my laptop. I opened iTunes and selected the sync command. There is nothing there. Opened from "this PC" and it shows the space but gives no additional information. Any ideas on how to force this iPod to sync? Thanks.
