"Account Error" in Mail and iCloud account not updating mails

Mail keeps getting an "Account Error" message which states:


"There may be a problem with the mail server or network. Verify the settings for account “iCloud” or try again.

The server returned the error: Connections to the server “p30-imap.mail.me.com” on the default ports timed out"


Any idea what this means and how I resolve it?

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X El Capitan (10.11.5), + iPhone 6 Plus & iPad Air 2

I've had the iCloud account for years on my Mac so can't recall how I originally set it up but I have deleted and reinstalled it and it still doesn't work (plus reboot etc). When I click on the error message it appears that the IMAP account is the iCloud account that has the issues. The issues are intermittent but I get in frequently every day.
