iPod Restoration problems Error 1413

I am having problems restoring an iPod to factory defaults. I wanted to do this just to wipe everything off of the 8GB nano before I gave it to my girlfriend for X-Mas.

I loaded it with music and photos and enabled it to be used as a hard drive. Through iTunes I went and deleted all the music and photos from the iPod. I then opened up the ipod in Windows Explorer and deleted the files that I transfered from my computer to another.

When I tried to restore it, it gave me an error 1413. I was able to find this information on it.

I downloaded the latest version of iTunes already. I havent had a chance to try solution 2 but I tried solution 3 and it didnt work. If solution 2 doesnt work what else can I try? Could I just go to the iPod through Windows explorer and delete the folders on the iPod and then try to update it?

just doublechecking ... do you have SpyCatcher
installed on that PC? (i'm most familiar with the
1413 hitting folks in that context.)

Yes I do have SpyCatcher. I am going to uninstall it before I reinstall iTunes and try to get the iPod working again.

good call with the uninstall of SpyCatcher. that seems the most reliable method of getting past both the "Registering modules" hang on an iTunes install, or the 1413 updating error.

you may not need to do a full reinstall of itunes here. after SpyCatcher has been uninstalled, reboot the PC and then do a repair install of itunes. (in Add/Remove, select itunes, click "Change" and then click "Repair".)

if the ipod update goes through properly after the repair install of itunes, you can reinstall SpyCatcher.

IT WORKED! I uninstalled Spycatcher, rebooted, uninstalled iTunes and Quicktime, made sure that all the files were deleted, rebooted again and re-installed iTunes and quicktime and I was able to restore the ipod with no problems at all. Thanks for all the help. I really do appreciate this. Now that I know this I will have to make sure when my girlfriend tries to load iTunes on her laptop that she gets rid of spycatcher first.

🙂 excellent news. glad you're up and running again.

just a thought for the girlfriend ... if she is going to be installing itunes for the first time ever on her laptop, it might be best to wait until after itunes has been successfully launched for the first time, before reinstalling SpyCatcher.

(the very first time itunes runs on a PC, or in a new XP user account, the itunes setup assistant runs. that involves Windows Installer running again ... and i've been involved in a thread today where it looks like SpyCatcher might be interfering with the running of the itunes setup assistant. i'm not 100% certain that that's what is going on yet ... but it's probably worth waiting until the setup assistant has done its thing and itunes has been launched successfully prior to a SpyCatcher reinstall.)

I also received the message "The iPod 'iPod' could not be restored. An unknown error occured (1413)" but I did not have SpyCatcher installed.

The only program I had installed that was similar was Ad-Aware SE. I unstalled that program and also turned off Windows Firewall before re-installing iTunes 7.0.2. Not sure if both were necessary, but after I completely re-installed iTunes, the connection with my iPod worked. Actually, when I reconnected my iPod, I no longer received the message that my iPod was corrupted (which was why I wanted to restore it), so I just updated the iPod software instead.

Another thing I did (although I am not sure if it helped) is that I have a Spanish operating system on my computer. The original version of iTunes I downloaded was in English and now I downloaded the version in Spanish.

So far so good.
