my iPhone 5 will not turn on

my iPhone 5 will not turn on, the display screen shows a picture of the iTunes and a usb charge cable, I am assuming I need to plug it into iTunes, I am hoping I do not need to restore to factory settings as i have really important work notes and need to desperately recover them i cannot get my phone to connect to iTunes, please help.
