Open draft messages are blank upon re-opening Mail

I always have a number of messages open in mail. If I quit the program and re-open, many of those are blank (incl. addressee, subject, body). In particular, messages that I have double clicked on to open or replies that are open but contain no new text. This happens with all my servers and on all computers. Operating system is El Capitan (10.11.6).
