could be the keyboard is dirty
Cleaning your Apple products - Apple Support
or damaged, in which case try a new keyboard

does this happen in one specific app or anytime you type?

try cleaning it.
Is it a mac keyboard? if so which style?
do you have any other USB keyboard around? even from a windows system as long as it's usb.
