brand new earPod problems

I purchased earPods today, wt volume control, and other toggle features on the headphones. The headphones play, but sound a tiny bit scratchy, and none of the toggle features will operate. Could I have purchased defective headphones, or won't they operate wt my device, iPod Touch version 9.3.3. I don't see why they wouldn't considering that my device is rather new, and is updated. I tried to go to http://www.apple.com/earphones to see if my device was compatible, since that is the link provided in it's documentation, but I'm getting a We're sorry (404) We can't find the article you're looking for. I have a very thin & light case on it, because I have dropped it on occasion, due to my disability.. This case does not get in the way at all, when putting the headphones in. Could it be causing the iPod to overheat, and this could be causing the problem? I was at an outdoor festival last weekend, and the temp reached 97 degrees, but keeping the device out of direct sunlight, prevented overheating. It seems to be operating okay now, so maybe the jack had something in it. Still turning the headphones in the jack will cause a little bit of static. Does that sound normal?

I doubt this is causing overheating, but there could be minute changes in the design of the headphone jack, as turingtest2 noticed it was a little harder for him as well.

The problem with the 404 error, which it also produces for me, is just that they have changed the page location, and probably have not updated those instructions you saw. No need to worry about that.

If you cannot make a trip to the Apple Store, you also have the option to contact Apple Support to ship the earpods in for service/replacement.

BTW does anyone, have any idea of why www.apple.com/earphones is giving me the error message 404? This is the exact link provided on page 2 of the EarPods manual.

The URL of the first redirect is missing a trailing zero, it should go to https://support.apple.com/HT3310 but that page redirects again. The final destination is Compatibility of Apple wired headset models with iPhone, iPad, and iPod models - Apple Support (HT201869).
