Q: Airplay

Hi All,

Can Airplay work like this?

Music stored on iMac but not in iTunes (reason is I have too much and it will all go up to the cloud and then down to my iphone)(or perhaps this can be configured not to do this but leave photo syncing?)

Music would be stored in a folder.

I connect an Apple TV 3rd gen via optical to my amp

I then use my iPhone to play the music from iMac onto my amp.

If this doesn't work, which I suspect it wont!  Can anyone suggest how I could play my music which is stored on my iMac onto my stereo in another room?

iPhone SE, iOS 9.3.3, iPhoneSE, iMac and iPod Touch

    No you can't do that.

Your music doesn't need to download to your phone, just don't tap the download button.

So, to stop my music on my Imac that is in iTunes streaming to my iPhone do I go to settings-itunes & App Stores and then un check under 'Automatic Downloads' Music?

    Or is it something else?

If I do this and stop my music in iTunes on my iMac from streaming to my phone and then store all my music in iTunes will I be able to use Airplay as I mentioned previously? Or does it not work like that?

Thank you for your patience I'm new to the Mac world

If you have automatic downloads enabled only newly purchased items will download to your phone, if you turn it off this will stop.

Any other music in iTunes (i.e. from CD's) only downloads if you manually download it from the phone. (This only happens if you have iCloud music enabled). If you see all your music on your phone and you haven't manually downloaded it then it's in the cloud not on your phone. If you don't want to seed music on your phone that isn't actually on your phone you can hide it (tap on the red artist/albums/songs label in the centre of the screen.

Yes if you put music in iTunes on your Mac you should be able to play it via airplay to the Apple TV without it filling your phone up.
