Q: Imac 27" won't boot and is getting very hot

Hey there,

My late 2009, 27" Imac won't boot anymore. It gets stuck on the white screen with the apple logo and the progress bar. It's also doing this when I'm booting in safe mode or recovery mode . I don't hear the fan but it's very hot on top.

I've also tried fsck -fy and got a "could not be verified completely" message.

I've had this problems for a couple of weeks but was always able to access recovery mode and restore from a time machine backup.

It is toast?

Thanks!

iMac, late 2009

It sounds like hardware, specifically your hard drive. You can take it to an Apple Store for a free evaluqtion but they will not do the repair because of the age of your iMac. They will refer you to an AASP (Apple Authorized Service Provider). If you are good with hardware, you can do the repair yourself. A good bare drive is less than $100.

You can also use Apple Depot which will repair everything that is faulty in your Mac for a fixed fee of $300 - $350.

I have the 27" iMac myself, a year later than yours, so I know it is inconvenient to drag around or ship. So, if you don't do the repair yourself an AASP would be your best bet.
