Macbook internet becomes very slow

THE PROBLEM

About a week ago the internet on my Macbook became very slow. Websites do eventually load but it can take up to five minutes in some occasions, or even longer. This consistently happens 10 seconds to 5 minutes after connecting to the web. At first everything is blazing fast, then all pages/apps using the internet start spinning.

ATTEMPTED SOLUTIONS

  • Replaced modem & router: I bought a new modem-router combo to replace my original separate modem and router, no change in issue.
  • Tried a third modem/router: A friend gave me his modem router to try and same issue. (In both cases I had my ISP update the MAC address
  • Tried other devices: I tried connectivity on other devices (iphone & ipad) and found no problems. Speedtest app shows 32mbps+ down and 5mbps+ up consistently.
  • Tried another browser: was using firefox, tried Chrome - same issue. Further, any app on my computer using the web runs slow, not just browsers.
  • Tried to connect to the web via ethernet direct to the modem: no improvement
  • Tried rebooting both the computer and modem/router: did this 7+ times over two days with no change
  • Tried to connect to the web via the mobile hotspot on my phone: issue persists.
  • Updated my computer and all apps: no change
  • I booted in safeboot and the problem went away

Hello Indianajoe7,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities. It's my understanding the internet is running slow on your MacBook Pro. I know how important internet speed can be for many apps and general everyday use. I am happy to help.
You have done a great job trying to resolve this on your own! Since the issue didn't occur in safe mode our next step is to check your login items. Please follow the instructions below:

Important: To print these instructions, click the Share button User uploaded file in the Help window, then choose Print.

Test your login items

  1. Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Users & Groups.

  2. Click your account name below Current User, then click Login Items.

Make a list of the login items—you’ll need to remember them later.

  3. Select all of the login items, then click the Remove button User uploaded file.

  4. Choose Apple menu > Restart.

  5. If this solves the problem, open Users & Groups preferences again, add the login items one at a time, and restart your Mac after adding each one.

When the problem occurs again, follow the steps above to remove only the last login item you added.

OS X El Capitan: If you think you have incompatible logins
Have a wonderful day!

Sounds like you might have something installed on your Mac that is slowing things down. You didn't install anything like MacKeeper? Could also be some malware. If you run EtreCheck and post the log it will help us see if you have any weird stuff running that could cause the problem. It does not publish personally identifiable information, it just lists hardware specs, free space, memory usage and what is running behind the scenes. http://etrecheck.com/

Initially looked really suspicious. But it's tied to X3 Watch and makes sense as a Christian peer review net nanny like tool. It is located in the OS System folder which should not normally be touched by anyone except Apple so much so that El Capitan locks this down via the new SIP protection. You should check to see if SIP protection is enabled. Launch the Terminal app and type in csrutil status and hit return. It should say "System Integrity Protection status: enabled". You might want to ask X3 Watch support about this.

X3 Watch appears to be frequently crashing over and over twice a minute in fact. You should reach out to their support page and ask for help. https://support.x3watch.com/

You have a curl process cranking at 100% at the time the report was run. I don't know what's triggered it, it's a command line HTTP tool useful for running scripts. I might be nothing or it might be something accessing the Internet behind the scenes downloading or uploading something. Might be related to X3 Watch as well.

Remove the older stuff such as Perian (doesn't work any more), KeyAccess, AppTrap, etc. if you don't really need them. Make sure your X11 Quartz is up to date as there could be security issues with X11.

Avast could be slowing you down. Make sure it's up to date, consider different security tools, Sophos is rated higher than Avast. Although there is malware and viruses for Mac in the wild the risk is rather low. So long as you are not surfing the dark places online and not installing pirated software you are unlikely to get infected. Especially if you only allow App Store applications. You could try uninstalling Avast and see if things speed up.

Overall the best thing you can do after addressing the above things would be to save up for an SSD hard drive. You would get just about 10 times faster disk performance which speeds everything up tremendously. Other World Computing has upgrade kits that make life easy. If you are savvy you can go with a cheaper SSD from Amazon / NewEgg, etc. https://eshop.macsales.com/shop/ssd/owc/macbook-pro/2011

Aug 4, 2016 7:32 AM in response to James Brickley

Turning on the Parental Controls in OS X and restricting Adult Sites goes a long way. In iOS it's under Restrictions and Websites. Also using OpenDNS (Cisco) Family Shield (you just replace your ISP's DNS servers with their DNS servers and it will block most of the bad stuff online. https://www.opendns.com/setupguide/?url=familyshield

The X3 Watch app appears to be your main problem so work with them to resolve the crashes and get it working properly.
